FINAL PAPER: SUMMARY AND REVIEW OF “THE EFFECTS OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH ON LABOR SUPPLY AND EMPLOYMENT IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES” Bloom’s goal in “The Effects of Rapid Population Growth on Labor Supply and Employment in Developing Countries” is to discuss ideas found in literature regarding population growth and development. Then through analyzing trends in graphs on labor participation, workforce in different sectors, etc to look at whether or not developing nations have been able to cope with labor force growth in an ultimate end of determining whether population growth helps or hinders development. The paper also discusses methods by which developing nations have been able to absorb the increase in labor force. In order to analyze the trends in the developing nations economy, Bloom divides the worlds nations into four different categories: low income developing economy (GNP per capita below $410), low middle income developing economy (GNP per capita between $410 and $1,650), upper middle income developing economy (GNP per capita above $1,650) and industrial market income economies (GNP per capita averages $11,070). The developing economies are also divided at points by the World Bank method into different geographical regions. Bloom then looks at data form the 1960’s and 1980’s as provided primarily by World Bank publications, but also United Nations and the International Labour Office. In analyzing the data, Bloom points out many trends. Population growth in all developing economies have had extremely high growth rates and only the upper middle developing economies show any signs of moderation. However, between 1962 and 1980 none of the developing groups experiences labor force growth rate not in excess of population growth rate.
