A photon is a piece of light with a precise wavelength, frequency, and energy. A photon is like a particle because it can be counted individually and can hit a wall one at a time. A photon is like a wave because each photon travels at the speed of light and is characterized by a wavelength and frequency. 4. Briefly describe the structure of an atom. How big is an atom? How big is the nucleus compared to the entire atom? An atom contains a nucleus made from protons and neutrons surrounded by a cloud of electrons. The atom is small; millions could fit end to end across the period in a sentence. The nucleus is nearly 100,000 times smaller than the atom and contains nearly all of its mass. 8.
