ELM- 305 Professor Armbrecht April 18, 2021 Clinical Field Experience A: Literacy Assessment and Framework I had the amazing opportunity of observing and interviewing a third-grade teacher at the Elementary School that I currently work at. I was able to ask specific questions regarding the topic of the framework of assessments. I gained so much valuable knowledge and insight when it comes to literacy assessment and framework. The first interview question I asked the teacher was, how does assessment data drive instruction and the literacy framework in her classroom. She responded that data from assessments allow her to create large group targeted skill-based lessons and allows her to form small, guided reading groups within her classroom. The next question I asked the teacher was about what data collection methods she uses to track and monitor student progress. She mentioned that she uses running records (every 2 months/more frequently when progress monitoring tier 2 and 3 students), informal observations during large and small group learning, reading street weekly and unit assessments all drive her instruction. All those data collection methods help her determine what skills need attention. I then asked the teacher what technology tools she uses to focus on continuous and effective data collection and analysis. The teacher said she uses Aimsweb screeners which are given to all
students using devices (ipads, Chromebooks). This data is used to “flag” students for intervention. She also uses many more pieces of data (running record, observation, daily work, weekly/unit assessments) to determine level of need. Aimsweb data helps her determine fluency groups using Six Minute Solution types of intervention. As a school district, she mentioned that they use a “Data Wall” that serves as a resource to determine how to group students based on reading and skill work levels. It also supports how teachers determine which students need intervention and which tier of intervention is needed. As far as technology, there are Aimsweb reports (comparing students in grade level bands in district and nation) and Illuminate Education
