We will have a quiz on religious terms next Monday… we will have the list and go over the list in section… the 2 nd paper is due next Wednesday… and then we have a paper due Wednesday… then there is nothing due… We have talked a bit about Confucianism and Taoism, but today we need to talk about India and Buddhism in India… After the fall of the han dynasty (3 rd -5 th centuries), Buddhism gradually spreads into the non-unified china and we can see general patterns towards why it comes into china and is so popular… People say that by the time Buddhism entered china, it had changed so much to become uniquely Chinese… Prescriptive versus descriptive texts… We will talk more about prescriptive texts this week… The Buddha was a prince raised in a palace and then he goes outside to see the real world… he wants to overcome the sadness that grips all of us and he wants to find the meaning to life… he tries different things to achieve this… a lot of people were doing various ascetic practices… this was based on the transmigration of souls… Buddha sits under a tree and he attains enlightenment…
