The Wizard of Oz is an odd movie. There are many instances of wish fulfillment in the movie. The movie provides both Dorothy and the depression era audience wish fulfillments. The easiest wish fulfillment is Dorothy being able to get back at the old lady who, in the dream, is portrayed by the Wicked Witch. Dorothy was angry with the old hag because she was out to get Toto. She claimed that Toto is a menace to the town and should be put down. Dorothy vehemently denied those accusations and told the old lady off. Later, in Dorothy’s dream, Dorothy is able to melt the old lady and finally, if not violently, end the hag’s reign of terror in the land of Oz. Another fulfillment was Dorothy wishing her farmhand friends were smarter, kinder, and more courageous. The Scarecrow, Tinman, and Cowardly Lion represented each farmhand. This is also believed that the farmhands themselves wished this for themselves. She wanted the best for her friends. These men protected her on the farm, but they also protected her in the
