Hess’ Law Logan Rice Scott Lee Wednesday 6:00-8:50 PM November 27, 2011 A. Research Question Using Hess’ Law, what were the three different heat changes ( H) from the three reactions in this experiment? B. Theoretical Approach In this experiment, since we were using Hess’ Law to determine the heat changes, we needed to understand Hess’ Law. Hess’ Law is the change in enthalpy. For example, the change in enthalpy for a stepwise process is the sum of the enthalpy changes of the steps (example given from the chemistry book.) There are many paths in which you figure out Hess’ Law. The first and the initial are the most important steps. C. Observation and Results In all three reactions, the temperature varied greatly. They all reached a high, then went back down but the temperature never really stayed constant when the two solutions were mixed. Table 1.
