Cody Floyd History Review Harry S. Truman- As president, Truman faced challenge after challenge in domestic affairs: a tumultuous reconversion of the economy marked by severe shortages, numerous strikes, and the passage of the Taft-Hartley Act over his veto . After confounding all predictions to win re-election in 1948 , he was able to pass only one of the proposals in his Fair Deal program. with the end of World War II (including his decision to use nuclear weapons in combat ), the founding of the United Nations , the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe , the Truman Doctrine to contain communism, the beginning of the Cold War , the creation of NATO , and the Korean War . GI Bill- provided for college or vocational education for returning World War II veterans (commonly referred to as GIs or G.I.s) as well as one year of unemployment compensation. It also provided loans for returning veterans to buy homes and start businesses. Fair Deal- Harry S. Truman 's policy of social improvement, outlined in his 1949 State of the Union Address to Congress on January 5 , 1949 . Truman stated that "Every segment of our population, and every individual, has a right to expect from his government a fair deal. House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)- 5) was an investigative committee of the United States House of Representatives . In 1969, the House changed the committee's name to the House Committee on Internal Security . When the House abolished the committee in 1975, its functions were transferred to the House Judiciary Committee . Direct result of mcarthyism. George Kennan- father of containment " and as a key figure in the emergence of the Cold War . He later wrote standard histories of the relations between Russia and the Western powers.In the late 1940s, his writings inspired the Truman Doctrine and the U.S. foreign policy of "containing" the Soviet Union , thrusting him into a lifelong role as a leading authority on the Cold War. His " Long Telegram " from Moscow in 1946 , Containment- refers to the foreign policy strategy of the United States in the early years of the Cold War . Its policy was to stop what it called the domino effect of nations moving politically towards Soviet Union -based communism , rather than European -American-based capitalism . Jackie Robinson- became the first African-American major league baseball player of the modern era in 1947 . Taft-Hartley Act of 1949- greatly restricts the activities and power of labor unions . The Act , still largely in effect, was sponsored by Senator Robert Taft and Representative Fred A. Hartley, Jr. and passed over U.S. President Harry S. Truman 's veto on June 23, 1947, establishing the act as a law. Labor leaders called it the "slave-labor bill" [1] while Truman argued that it would "conflict with important principles of our democratic society" NSC-68- the function of the Council has been to advise and assist the President on national security and foreign policies.
