Onthe other hand, for the information technology community, ERP is a termdescribing a software system that integrates application programs in finance,manufacturing, logistics, sales and marketing, human resources, and otherfunctions in a firm. This integration is accomplished through a databaseshared by all the functions and data-processing applications. ERP systemstypically are very efficient at handling the many transactions that documentthe activities of a company. For our purposes, we begin by describing ourview of what ERP should accomplish for management, with an emphasis onplanning. Following this, we describe how the ERP software programs aredesigned and then provide points to consider in choosing an ERP system. Ourspecial interest is in how the software supports supply chain planning andcontrol decisions.
