DIFFERENTIATING MATH ACTIVITIES 2 Section 1: Lesson Preparation Teacher Candidate Name: Cali Werkmann Grade Level: 3 rd Grade Date: March 29, 2021 Unit/Subject: Mathematics Instructional Plan Title: Fractions and Equivalent Fractions Lesson Summary and Focus: Students Will Be Able to (SWABT): identify equivalent fractions using visual models, define and explain what equivalent fractions are. Classroom and Student Factors/Grouping: The class consists of four students who are all eligible and receive Special Education Services in the area of Mathematics and have IEP’s for special accommodations, modifications and specific academic goals. Of the four students, the disabilities that are being worked with are Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Specific Learning Disability (SLD), and Intellectually Disabled (ID). Of the four, three are on grade level and one is above grade level for their age. In mathematics, three of the four are exhibiting academic ability two years below grade level and one is one year below grade level. (Class Profile, 2019). National/State Learning Standards: 3. Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size (Common Core, 2011) a. Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a number line (Common Core, 2011). b. Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3). Explain why the fractions are equivalent, by using a visual fraction model (Common Core, 2011). Specific Learning Target(s)/Objectives: SWBAT (Students Will Be Able To): Recognize and define vocabulary words with the support of visuals and sentence frames Recognize and identify different fractions that are equal by using visual model assistance Create visuals of equal fractions by various methods Academic Language Equal
DIFFERENTIATING MATH ACTIVITIES 3 Equivalent Part Whole Numerator Denominator Fraction Prior to the start of the lesson, the terms above will be reviewed with the students to ensure their understanding. They will be shown videos to explain each and will be provided with a list along with visuals.
