BABURBabur was born inAndijan, in theFergana Valley, in modernUzbekistan. He was the eldest son ofUmar Sheikh Mirza, governorofFerganaand great-great grandson of Timur. Babur ascendedthe throne of Fergana in its capitalAkhsikentin 1494 at the age oftwelve and faced rebellion. He conqueredSamarkandtwo yearslater, only to lose Fergana soon after. In his attempt to reconquerFergana, he lost control of Samarkand. In 1501, his attempt torecapture both the regions went in vain as he was defeatedbyMuhammad Shaybani Khan. In 1504, he conqueredKabul,which was under the rule of the infant heir ofUlugh Begh. Baburformed a partnership withSafavidruler Ismailand reconqueredparts ofTurkistan, including Samarkand, only to again lose it andthe other newly conquered lands to the Sheybanids.After losing Samarkand for the third time, Babur turned hisattention to India. At that time, theIndo-Gangetic Plainof theIndian subcontinent was ruled byIbrahim Lodiof the AfghanLodidynasty, whereasRajputanawas ruled by a HinduRajputConfederacy, led byRana SangaofMewar. Babur defeatedIbrahim Lodi at theFirst Battle of Panipatin 1526 CE and foundedthe Mughal empire. He faced opposition from Rana Sanga ofMewar, and Medini Rai, another rajput ruler in thebattle ofChanderiwho considered Babur a foreigner. The Rana wasdefeated in theBattle of Khanwa.Babur married several times. Notable among his sonsareHumayun,Kamran MirzaandHindal Mirza. Babur died in 1530
in Agra and was succeeded by Humayun. He was first buried inAgra but, as per his wishes, his mortal remains were moved toKabul reburied.[6]Being a patrilineal descendant of Timur, Baburconsidered himself a Timurid andChagatai Turkic.
