Rylee JohnsonBio 113-1Chapter 5, The Structure and Function of Large Biological MoleculesKey Concept 1: The carbon foundation of carbohydrates it a useful supplier of energy to thebody and other biological molecules. These carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, whichgets sent throughout the body, supplying energy to the muscles and brain (Urry et al., 2019). Forexample, Lactose, a carbohydrate or sugar (disaccharide) found in dairy is composed of glucoseand galactose through a glycosidic linkage (covalent bond through dehydration reaction). Aslactose enters the body, the enzyme lactase breaks the lactose down into the separate sugars, glucose and galactose, through hydrolysis (addition of water molecule breaks down bondbetween monomers). However, if someone does not make enough of the enzyme, the body isunable to break the carbohydrate lactose and it is broken down by bacteria instead resulting inlactose intolerance (Medical News…Jan 25).
