Cell Phys Lecture 10 September 30 2013 Mitchell Thom - All Electrical Currents in the body rely on the same basic physics - Potential (V): Volt (V)       mV (10 -3  V) - Current (I): Ampere (A)     nA (10 -9  A), pA (10 -12  A) - Resistance (R): Ohm (W) MW (10 6  W), GW (10 9  W) - Conductance (G): Siemens(S)  nS (10 -9  S), pS (10 -12  S) - Electical Current and voltage o Current = movement of charges o The direction of current is the movement of positive charges from high to  low electrical potential (voltage) o o Height = V  o Ball rolling down hill = I o Hill can be smooth or sticky (resistance) - Electric Currents in Excitable Cells o In biological tissues, electrical activities are carried by ions Ions= cations and anions Cations: Na+, K+, Ca++, Mg++ Anions: HCO3- - Ohm’s Law o I= V/R o V=IR o G = conducatance = 1/R o I = GV o V I R I V R c o n d u c t o r - Brain, Neurons, and Channels o o in 1900s people realized there were many different shapes of neurons o have common properties in all different types of neurons all able to fire an action potential/all excitable because of their ion  channels

    As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

    The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
