Cell Phys Lecture 7 Sept 23 2013 Transport across Epithelium 2 Mitchell Thom - Trans-cellular macromolecule pathway is required to pass things through a  membrane o Water needs a transporter to pass through a cell membrane. It does not  diffuse - Glucose Transport in Enterocytes (Intestinal Epithelial cells) o 2 Na+ and 1 Glucose into a high glucose and low Na environment o Uses Na+ concentration gradient to get glucose in the cells through the  apical membrane SECONDARY Active Transport because of Na+/K+ transport o 3 different types from a similar family and different genes Most important SGLT1 in intestine SGLT1 and 2 in the kidneys o Now we need to cross the basolateral to get the glucose into the   extracellular fluid and then blood stream o Glucose crosses from high to low concentration in the extracellular fluid  through a protein o In order to keep the Na+ concentration gradient we have the Na+/K+  active transporter moving Na+ out of the cell and K+ into the cell Primary Active Transport - Glucose Uniporter o Facilitated Transport o Glut2  is from a family of glucose transporters and is present in the  intestine - Simple Rehydration Therapy o If you have diarrhea you should drink water with glucose and sodium to  create a trans-epithelial osmotic gradient Drags water into your cells more efficiently than just water alone -

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
