In some cases it is an ideal to strive for or virtues valued above others. The example given of the Middle Ages refers to the aristocracy promoting honor and loyalty. This ideology inspired chivalry to the extent that those of the lower classes lived and died for the aristocrats. Such ideology was a tool for the aristocracy to get what they wanted from their subjects. Capitalists later used the same weapon to promote a different attitude. Instead of the loyalty and honor the lower class was once encouraged to embrace, the new idea of individualism was promoted. Instead of working for someone else’s gain, the bourgeoisie painted a pretty picture of working for one’s own gain, building up one’s own
