Matt Karam PHYS 214- 10 February 14, 2008 The Silent Cartographer 1. Goals: To explore the concepts behind electrical equipotential and field lines by mapping out the charge areas on Field Mapping Paper. 2. Theory: a. Concepts: Equipotential lines relate to cartography lines in that they represent a voltage potential as map line represent altitude. On a field map the equipotential line each represent a step up or down in voltage much in the way a geographical map has lines representing changes in height above or below a certain altitude. If one were to roll a ball down a hill, the path of the ball would roll perpendicular to the topographical altitude lines, this is true of electrical fields as well, as charges flow perpendicular to the equipotential lines, to lower charge from higher charged areas. Steepness in the analogy is analogous to the total voltage difference compared to how close the charges are. b. V
