Range of conditions for life Cell/body temperatures from -2 degrees Celsius to 130 degrees Celsius Range of pressures: 1 atm to 1100 atm Conditions at the average depth of the ocean 2 degrees Celsius to 4 degrees Celsius 380 atm of pressure No sunlight 2. Antarctic fishes Live (and have body temperatures at -2 degrees Celsius - below the freezing temperature of most vertebrates body fluids) Are Ectotherms -body temperatures determined by factors around them. Accumulate “anti-freeze molecules” 3. Penguins Keep warm at similar temperatures Are Endotherms -Organisms whose body temperatures are set by the heat their bodies produce. 4. Diving seals Hold their breath for as long as 90 minutes Dive down to 1500 m for as long as 90 minutes Ex: Weddell Seal 5. Deep-sea fishes Down to 700 m High pressure, cold temperature, low food availability o Ex: Rattail fishes 6. Barophiles Bacteria – piezophiles (=barophiles) are “pressure loving” Thrive at pressures that kill surface bacteria. o People are trying to simulate high pressure to preserve food 7. Thermophiles Bacteria- thermophiles exist at temperatures up to 130 degrees Celsius (grow at 121 degrees Celsius)

Ex: Hydrothermal vents (at areas of volcanic activity) aka “black smoker”- not actually smoke, but minerals that are precipitating out 8. Sharks Live with ½ molar urea in their tissues so they can match the osmotic concentrations with the strength of sea water. Urea is a potent denaturant of proteins (biochemists use it to unfold protein to study it) 9. Halophiles Halophilic bacteria live in osmotic equilibrium with 3 molar salt Ex: Halophilic archaea in red brine of Owens Lake, CA (reddish membrane in their cells) 10. Tuna Can raise the temperature of their muscles above ambient (as much as 15 degrees Celsius) Are Endotherms in contrast to most fish , which are ectothermic. 11. Gutless Tubeworms Thrive at deep-sea hydrothermal vents Don’t have a mouth, digestive tract, or anus; however, can get up to 6 feet long. They survive through symbiotic bacteria living in their bodies that make use of the chemical energy found at hydrothermal vents in the water (similar to plants using sunlight) 12. Midwater fish and invertebrates Organisms living in the water column achieve neutral buoyancy despite the high density of biological materials. Some of the deep sea fish have body water content of up to 90%.
