Executive Summary
The first part looks at Just-In-Time as inventory management practice where goods are delivered
when they are required in production. JIT’s main purpose is to increase productivity and cut
inventory costs. JIT has numerous benefits to the business such as reduction inventory costs, lead
time reductions and improved customer satisfaction. The first case study looks at a queuing
challenge at a Darshan Temple where numerous pilgrims during the pilgrimage period line up to be
blessed by Lord Vitthal. The pilgrims can only line up on one line which can span for more than 7
kilometers. The pilgrimage is tough on the young kids as well as the elderly as the queue weaves
through steep bridges and the delays are unpredictable running a number of hours at times. The
town’s social amenities are often severely strained by the number of pilgrims that visit every
pilgrimage period. Traditional methods such as multiple queues are not applicable, and the town
cannot be expanded as it the town needs to be preserved on religious grounds having been in place
for more than 400 years. The researchers seek to solve the issue by introducing a ticketing system
that allow pilgrims to check in 30 minutes before they are scheduled to go into the Darshan Temple.
This guarantees pilgrims to be able to be in the temple at the feet of Lord Vitthal in less than 15
minutes. This solution manages the issue of extra-long lines and unexpected delays as pilgrims
visited are scheduled
