Lab-in-a-Box Experiment 15: A Discharging RC Network Name: ______________________ Pledge: _____________________ ID: ______________________ Date: ______________________ Procedure V 1 D C = 9 1 2 U 1 T O P E N = 0 C 1 1 0 0 u R 1 4 7 0 R e d L E D D 1 3 1 2 R 2 0 Figure 1: Circuit for observing a capacitor discharge with an LED. Analysis: 1. After the switch in the circuit shown in Figure 1 has been closed for a long time, what is the voltage across the capacitor C1 and how much charge, Q, has been stored on it? 2. What is the state of the LED D1 (glowing or off)? 3. Using a graphing program of your choice (e.g., Excel or MATLAB), plot the current response of the circuit after the switch has been opened. For now, assume that the resistance of the LED is about 150 Ω. 4. If we assume that the LED will be invisible if the current through it is less that 1 mA, based on the data in step 3, approximately how long will it take the LED to extinguish after the switch has been opened? Measurements: 5. Measure the value of the resistor R1 with your DMM.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
