Why is this evidence for the spontaneous mutation hypothesis (versus the adaptive mutation hypothesis)? 3.Trace a mutation: starting with the gene, show the effect of a mutation in the E. coli argX gene (fictional, but involved in the biosynthesis of arginine). Describe the effect of the mutation at the gene level, at the protein/enzyme level and at the whole organism level.
