1September 22, 2005 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION Chapter 5 Language Language is culture and culture is language. Language constitutes a large part of culture. Culture influences language. Language- written, spoken (also non verbal) What is Language??? Consists of the written and spoken form as well as the non verbal aspect. A distinctively human feature. Symbols are a uniquely human feature. Symbolism Language is arbitrary. Series of symbols, grouped together to give meaning to the people who understand them. There are 6000 languages 95% of worlds population speaks just 100 of these 6000 languages. Which means there are languages with very small or dying populations. Have the power of numbers Have the backing of the state. Each language has a unique way of looking at the world. When a language dies we can say a way of life is dead. Spoken and written are the primary ways of communication. Open system of communication - flexible, you can make a brand new sentence every time. Example - humans
