Other metals are found in combined form Table 23.1 To obtain the metals in pure form requires work Metallurgy Mining, concentrating, reduction to the free metal, purification (refining), mixing with other elements to modify properties Pyrometallurgy High temperatures to decompose carbonates (PbCO 3 ) Oxygen to convert sulfides to oxides (ZnO) Reduction of oxides by carbon monoxide or hydrogen (Fe 3 O 4 ) CaO used to extract SiO 2 (slag formation) Steel Iron treated with O 2 /Ar to oxidize C, Si other metals Metal oxides react with SiO 2 and P 4 O 10 Other metals added to produce alloys Figure 23.6 Hydrometallurgy Desired metal extracted with water (solution) 4 Au (s) + 8 CN - (aq) + O 2(g) + 2H 2 O (l) 4 Au(CN) 2 - (aq) + 4 OH - (aq)
