Unformatted text preview: Unit Three: Philosophies of Life 11/8/06 Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) Physiologist, M.D in Vienna-specialized his practice on nervous diseases Psychoanalysis- type of psychiatry, followers of Freud Psychiatry-larger grouping Hysteria-uncontrolled emotional recreation-at Freuds time women were considered to be the main victims of hysteria (one of the nervous diseases) Charcot - Hypnosis, Electroshock Breller - Recall the experience mental/emotional disorders-caused by unconscious mental contents. This process was taken over by Freud Early Freud: Conscience Mind + Preconscious Unconscious mind-dynamic increases: contains-desires, effects of past experiences Later Freud: Iceberg analogy-3 part model of mind Super Ego-(part of conscience) - rules we are expected to follow, learned as a person grows up. All sorts of behavioral norms Ego-(part of conscience) mediator, reality principle, decides how to satisfy desires ID-(the unconscious) instincts, physical desires Instincts are energy behind thought, actions Basic Instincts: Life(Eros), Sexual(Libido), Self Preservation, Death(Thanatos)- Aggression, sadism, masochism, self-destruction Stages of Human Development:-How you were treated as a child determines how you turn out in the future Oral (associated with eating) Anal (associated with potty training) Phallic (children have a kind of sexual nature)-Oedipus Complex: Returns to his hometown and without knowing he kills his father and marries his mother-Electra Complex: girls have conflicting attitudes towards their mother. Same idea as Oedipus complex-Parenting the minimizes the trauma associated with these stages of human development develop the best human beings in the long run *Unsatisfied instincts do not go away*-It will reappear as some kind of unwanted behavior in the long run Illnesses: Neurosis-emotional disorder where certain things are prominent in the personality; Freud would say that everyone is a little neurotic; Disturbance of normal functioning which causes a small problem in normal life Psychosis-mental and emotional problems impair you enough to not have a normal life Repression- push memories (traumatic) back into the unconscious mind-Will eventually resurface Regression-to go back to a previous stage in life; When people cant handle a situation people lie down in the fetal position-most extreme Frustration, prohibition, privation 11/10/06 Methods of Psychoanalysis: Free Association Dream Analysis-Self knowledge is key to a cure Civilization requires control of instincts Superego-a idea that allows people to retain all the laws of human society so that people can police their own instincts The Future of and Illusion : refers to religion-Society has to be set up in a way that rewards work and penalizes laziness Oldest Instinctual Wishes: Incest Cannibalism Lust for killing-things that society must absolutely prohibit to able to function Civilization-provides defense against nature Humanization of Nature-represent nature as created by a God and operated by God, the...
