Since starting in this profession just afew months prior to Sandy Hook there have been changes starting with;site visitor protocol, campus entry point checks, and the constant vigilanceof keeping an eye out for any kind of weapon, a larger emphasis on aphysical presence instead of just being another adult on campus and lastlythe mental health of students and the ways it is adressed. While prior to theColumbine High shooting in 1999 (Columbine High School shootings2009)caused people to realize that the worst possibility of a child going to schooland being shot was in fact possible, most schools took steps to addressthat possibility however after Sandy Hook school districts took a moreactive approach since the number of shootings at schools rose
Rushing 2exponentially to an average of 1 school shooting every 77 days (Are SchoolShootings Becoming More Frequent? We Ran The Numbers2019).In the first way school protocols changed even in the few monthsbetween Sandy Hook and from when I started in May of that same workthere has been a focus on ensuring all visitors are identified prior to entry toa campus. There have been companies that have invented devices andprogramming to run a license of a visitor against a database to identify ifthey are a sexual offender or even if your district has identified them as anunwanted person so a message flashes for them to be seen byadministration or security. Schools went from a more open dynamic forparents and visitors to clear parameters for entry.
