Designing Product, Hybrid, Warehousing & Storage Layout(ASSIGNMENT #03, SEMESTER SPRING-2020)Submission Date (July 21, 2020)BYHafsa Niaz17460920-054(Projection & Operation Management)BBA6th(C)Submitted toSir; Badar MunirManagement SciencesUniversity of GujratSession 2017-2021
DESIGNING PRODUCT LAYOUTProduct layout is a design that positions workstations together based on the product theymake. In product layouts the material moves continuously and uniformly through a sequenceof operations until the work is completed. The sequence of operations allows for thesimultaneous performance of work. When designing product layouts, our objective is todecide on the sequence of tasks to be performed by each workstation. To accomplish this, need to consider the logical order of the tasks to be performed and the time required toperform each task. Also, need to consider the speed of the production process, which will tellhow much time there is at each workstation to perform the assigned tasks. This entire processis called line balancing.Line balancing:The process of assigning tasks to workstations in a product layout in order to achieve adesired output and balance the workload among stations.Example:Ali owns his own business where he makes toys. Each toy has special pieces where specialmachines are needed to not only make those pieces but to assemble them into a finishedproduct. He has decided to purchase a bigger warehouse due to increase in demand, he needsto decide how the machines will be positioned. Thus, each workstation will complete a toyfrom start to finish and each of his toys will have their own workstation.Steps for Product Layout1.Identify Task & Their Immediate PredecessorsThe first step in designing product layouts is to identify the tasks or work elements thatmust be performed in order to produce the product. To determine how long each tasktakes to perform and which tasks must be performed in sequence. The task or tasks thatmust be performed immediately before another task can be done is called the task'simmediate predecessor.Immediate predecessor:A task that must be performed immediately before another task.
Example:Vicki's Pizzeria is planning to make boxed take-out versions of its famous pepperoni, sausage, and mushroom pizza. The pizzas will be made on a small assembly line. Vickihas identified the tasks that need to be performed, the time required for each task, andeach task's immediate predecessor.
