History 268-01 19 April 2013 Industrial Comparison of 18 th  Century China and England The Industrial Revolution was one of the most developmental eras in history, as  life in the modern world would be difficult to imagine without the advances made  between 1760 and 1840. The spread of industrial growth was impacted by numerous  variables that changed for each state. Government policies directly impacted the changes  that a state would pursue an industrial future. The current state of agriculture within a  state determined whether a reallocation of labor to industry was needed to improve the  nation. The resources available to a state that could be invested in the growth of industry  impacted the direction a course of action implemented. For some states, such as England,  these variables aligned perfectly to generate an industrial powerhouse. However, some  states, such as China, opted to avoid the trend and maintain their current standard of  living. Through the course of this essay, I will use examples of government interference,  agricultural influence, and the valuation of available resources to demonstrate how the  Chinese were far from industrial growth in the eighteenth century. The policy of a national government has a strong, direct correlation to the  likelihood of the state experiencing industrial growth. In England for example, the  government supported the efforts of entrepreneurs and utilized sovereign power to  advance their pursuits, so long as the state stood to benefit as well. For example, the  British government granted a royal monopoly to the Dutch East India Corporation as well

as offered forums for which scholars could collaborate and discuss new ideas. 1  Therefore, the policy of the British government aided in the development of an industrial nation as  the Dutch East India Company was able to expand trade and generate new demand for  British produced goods across the globe while the intellects of the state worked to  improve production methods in order to satisfy the newly acquired demand. Conversely,  the Chinese government focused on domestic politics and worked to preserve the status  quo. More specifically, the Ming and Qing Dynasties ruled in a period of peace thus

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
