DEPARTMENT OF TEACHING AND LEARNING Spring 2014 (January 4, 2014 to May 3, 2014) COURSE NUMBER: MUE 4013 COURSE TITLE: Music for Elementary School I (2 Semester Hours) COURSE CONNECTION TO CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK: As a future educator, students will demonstrate the capability to make thoughtful, ethical and informed decisions, and will provide evidence of being a capable professional by developing and teaching integrated lesson plans with music. Each student will demonstrate respect and understanding for the cognitive, psychological, and sociological needs in young children. Students will also demonstrate the ability to evaluate historical and cultural musical styles using knowledge of elements of music. Content will include learning of musical notation, historical and cultural musical styles, as well as proper techniques for singing, playing musical instruments, listening to music, moving to music and creating music in the elementary classroom. Not open to music majors. Students will identify the role and significance music can play in relation to the other arts and disciplines outside the arts. (INTASC: 1, 10; FEAP: A 3; ESOL:11,17; K-6: SMCS 28.2, 29.2) 2. Students will develop an appreciation for a variety of musical styles in relation to history, cultures of the world, every day living and lesson integration. (INTASC: 3, 9; FEAP: A 1, 3 & B1; ESOL:2, 4; K-6: SMCS 27.1, 29.1, 29.2) 3. Students will demonstrate proficiency in planning high quality lesson plans that correlate and integrate subject matter of other curricula and disciplines including language arts, math, science and social studies with those of music using grade level objectives and the Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards to meet the needs of diverse students. (INTASC: 5, 7, 8; FEAP: A1, 2, 3, 4 & B 2; FAU-FEAP 10.1 & 10.2; ESOL: 4, 5, 6,8,17,25; K-6: SMCS 27.1, 28.1) 4. Students will demonstrate proficiency in instructing and assessing high quality lessons that integrate music into diverse settings with appropriate grade level objectives and Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.
