Nella Marie Larsen was born on April 13, 1891, in Chicago. She was born to a Danish mother and a African – West Indian father. “Her father died when she was two; two years later her mother married a Danish man” (Bloom 103). In 1907, Nella entered and all-black high school, called Fisk University. She stayed there for one year before leaving. After that, “she studied as a nurse in New York and later worked in the at profession in Tuskegee, Alabama, and in New York” (Bloom 103). In 1922, she became a Librarian at the New York Public Library, in charge of the children’s books. Education

In 1919, she married Dr. Elmer S. Imes, a physicist. They later got divorced in 1933. On March 30, 1964, Nella Larsen died in New York. “She is buried in Brooklyn’s Cypress Hills Cemetery” (Bloom 104).
