Outside Reading For my outside reading, I decided to read the book “Faith and Politics: How the ‘Moral Values’ Debate Divided America and How to Move Forward Together” by Senator and ordained Episcopal priest John Danforth. This book was not at all what I had expected it to be. I knew that Republican, and even though he is a self-proclaimed “moderate,” I never expected him to be quite so liberal , at least on civil rights issues. The Senator was actually quite critical of the Christian Right and what they have done to politicize religion and make politics more religious. I found Senator Danforth to be almost an oxymoron, a religious Episcopal priest serving in the United States Senate as a Republican yet in favor of almost every current “liberal” social issue. One of the chapters in his book that I found the most interesting and pressing for me was the one outlining his views regarding gay marriage. While he is no longer an acting Senator, he still carries some clout on Capitol Hill. He came off in his book as a
