GOV 310L Discussion 09/11/2007 14:06:00 Two party system: Reasons for the two party system o SMSP: divided in geographical units and the representation is not  proportional to the population voting  a certain way PR system: representation is proportional.  This is more  common in Europe Decline of parties (Fiarino reading) Dimensions of political parties o Party In Electorate (PIE) the idea that you must have voters that hold a psychological  attachment to the party.  Substantive affiliation. Grounds that  way you think about politics this is thought to be something that you are socialized into early  in life and your parents tend to give you partisan cues.  This is  pretty stable for the most part o Party In Government (PIG) elected OFFICIALS (not necessarily everyone in D.C.) o Party Organization (PO) they are the “machinery” in the party.  They are the party  workers, leaders, staffers, etc. There is evidence of party decline according to the PIE o evidence is more “ticket-splitting” o electoral disaggregation:  there was an increase in the number of
