Genital Herpes Genital herpes is a very serious and incurable sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by the herpes simplex viruses HSV-1 and HSV-2. The most common form of genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. This horrible disease can cause serious physical and mental symptoms. In the United States, about 45 million people above the age of 12 years old are infected. Unfortunately, there are no cures for genital herpes, but it can be avoided. Genital herpes is contracted through physical contact with someone who has the disease. In most cases, there must be a sore present to contract genital herpes, but this isn’t always the case. Genital herpes can be contracted from a partner with no visible symptoms and quite possibly no knowledge of having the disease.
