Salopek 1 ART 186: MWF 1:00 pm Brittany Salopek 04/25/07 An American Film Dressed in a Japanese Kimono Memoirs of Geisha: Film Response Before reading any information or watching the film, I had no prior knowledge of whom geishas were, what role they played in society, nor the difference between them compared to any prostitute . In fact, I had never before heard of the word geisha or the concept of a geisha’s being . After researching, my opinion obviously drastically changed and in fact I see the world of geishas in a positive light . I found that geisha are traditional, female Japanese entertainers, whose skills include performing various Japanese arts, such as music, singing, and dancing . They also engage their clients with light conversation . Geishas are also trained to play instruments, make flower arrangements, properly wear a kimono, take part in tea ceremonies, demonstrate calligraphy, correctly serve alcohol, and mainly become a pleasurable asset to society .
