Brent Mansingh September 19, 2007 Fred Thurber Joseph Stalin’s Contribution the Oil Industry By the year 1900, Russia had contributed more than 30 percent to the world’s oil production, with the “Nobel” brothers possessing a little over one third of it. Until World War I, Russia had a leading role in the development of oil-processing technology. Royal Dutch/Shell carried the oil to Western Europe, as Russia’s oil industry thrived until the Russian Revolution. As the revolution went on, several foreign oil companies rushed in hoping to cash in on oil at reduced prices. The Nobel brothers sold much of their operations to Exxon Mobil to hopefully establish an alliance in 1920. The Soviets however, played the foreign companies off of each other while building a national oil industry for themselves. The first oil refinery called Omsk, which is one of the largest in the world, started to produce in 1955. Because of Joseph Stalins ambition to discover new oil, by 1959 Russia had replaced Venezuela as the worlds largest oil producer at 300,000 barrels per day.
