What areas of Greece did Sparta conquer early in its history? What was important about these conquests? Sparta was a militaristic society. They conquered Messenia. The battle of Thermopylae was the proudest moment Sparta had control of all of southern Greece including that states of Messenia, Laconia, Kynouria, and Thyreatis. What is a helot? What role did they play in Spartan society? How did they impact the way Spartan society was organized? The inhabitants of lands taken over by Sparta became enslaved Helots. Helots formed the backbone of Spartan society: moral barrier between citizens. What kind of political system did the Spartans have? What are the different parts of its political structure? What role did each play? How were checks and balances between them maintained? Sparta government was most like a oligarchy. It consisted of the Lycurgus- who reformed the Spartan constitution into a militaristic society in response to the helotization of Messenia to prevent rebellion from helots. 2 kings, 5 ephors, assembly of equals 9000 men, and the gerousia which was council of 28 elders and 2 kings. Some feel 2 kings were appointed to prevent absolutism and their roles were mainly religious,
