November 25, 2007 Discussion Section 23 Kevin Critical Analysis: Prison Systems The prison study interview with Angela Davis greatly expanded my understanding of the nature of punishment in America, as well as other late-aged capitalistic countries, society. In the interview Davis explains prisons as a place to hide away out unwanted, she analyzes the kind of people we as a society deem as a unwanted. She also goes so far as to equate our prison system to an institution of neo-slavery. Before I read this interview my view on prisons were that they were generally not intended for punishment but more to serve the purpose of recognizing the problem and taking steps to ensure it does not continue to happen. Angela Davis does not view prisons as a system of rehabilitation with prevention as the underlying goal, her opinion of prison is a means of profitability for the rest of society. She points to numerous factors also highlighted in the Henslin readings that show not only is the prison system flooded with inmates that are greatly disproportionate to society but also that this is an inherent
