Heracles 1. Heracles a. The greatest of Greek heroes b. Strong, adventurous, and funny c. His Twelve Labors were the theme of the sculptural art on the Temple  of Zeus 2. The Birth of Heracles a. Perseus’ son Electryon married his own niece, and they had a  daughter Alcmena and nine sons a.i. Electryon had two nephews: Eurystheus and Amphitryon a.ii. Electryon was attacked by pirates. All but one of his sons were  killed in this battle b. He entrusted his kingdom and daughter to his nephew Amphitryon b.i. Amphitryon killed Electryon, married Alcmena and ran away to  Thebes b.ii. Alcmena would not sleep with him until he avenged the deaths of  her brothers c. Zeus appears to Alcmena as her husband and has her way with her c.i. The same night the real husband returns and he sleeps with her c.ii. Two kinds of seeds; divine and mortal c.iii. From the divine seeds came Heracles, from the mortal Iphicles d. Hera jealous makes Alcmena’s labor very painful. e. Birth goddess came to help but Hera’s instruction she sat outside the  chamber with her legs crossed and her fingers intertwined f. By magical sympathy she prevented the birth of Heracles g. Galanthis, came to help Alcmena. She realized what was happening
