1Final Project: A Plan to Conserve WaterRaynell McClellan Southern New Hampshire University SCI218 – Natural Resources October 18, 2020
2IntroductionScope of TopicWater is essential to sustain all life on Earth, including us humans. Historically, humans have used water for drinking, bathing, cooking, agriculture, recreation, and as a source of energy.Water covers 71% of the planet, but the availability of freshwater is very limited, only making upabout 2.5% of the water on the planet. Of this water over 68% is frozen in glaciers, leaving even less water available for use. With nearly 8 billion on the planet, there is a great stress on this natural resource, especially with issues of over usage and the effects of climate change. People are using more water per person than ever, despite the growing population, while climate change is causing worsening droughts. Humans are also polluting our precious waterways, making cleanwater even less available to us.Importance to MeI try very hard to be eco-friendly, as it is a very important to me, but with a large family sometimes this comes with challenges. Currently, in my home we follow the reduce, reuse, recycle and compost mantra, this helps us to reduce our volume of trash tremendously but there are other places where we fall short. I feel that one of the hardest places for my family to be environmentally friendly is with conservation of water. It is very important to me to be actively involved in improving the conditions of planet and this is not possible to do without conserving water. Therefore, I have chosen to focus on reducing my family’s water usage by at least 50% formy final project. Importance in the United States
3Though, humans have always used water, it was not until more recent history that indoor plumbing was invented and even more recent history since it has been become a standard of living. Unfortunately, this standard of living has led to over usage of water all around the world and certainly right here in the United States. In fact, over usage of natural resources is unfortunately ingrained into our way of living here in the United States. This creates challenges when it comes to trying lower your ecological footprint here. To make a to do list of things to getdone around the home without using water, energy, or both, would be nearly impossible. Water isalso used here to produce energy, with hydroelectric power providing 6.6% of electric needs (EPA, n.d.). Americans also use the most water at home than people of any other nation around the world. Importance GloballyAround the world, water usages vary by country. On average the most developed countries are responsible for the most water use, while less developed countries are the most effected by the environmental issues that arise from over usage of water. With such a small percentage of Earth’s water available to us as fresh non frozen water, it is extremely important that we take care of this natural resource.
