Central Nervous System – Brain and Spinal Cord 1. Neurons – Building blocks (cells) of the Nervous System that receive and transmit (send) information. a. Mirror neurons – frontal lobe neurons that fire when performing certain actions or when observing another do so i. May enable : imitation, language, learning, empathy b. Sensory Neurons – receive c. Inter Neurons – transfer information from one neuron to another d. Motor Neurons – Transmit (send to react) 2. Neurotransmitters – Chemical messengers that relay information from one neuron to the next. a. Cocaine blocks the reuptake of 3 neurotransmitters b. Dopamine – inhibitory effects. Linked to (low levels)Parkinson’s disease and (high levels)schizophrenia. Linked to emotion, intense pleasure c. Serotonin – Linked to sleep, dreaming, arousal, (affects mood)depression, (hunger)eating disorders, OCD. d. Norepinephrine – alertness, arousal, low levels depress mood e. GABA – Linked to anxiety,seizuresm tremors, insomnia f. Acetylcholine – Linked to Alzheimer’s , learning, memory g. Endorphins – Morphine within, chemical
