Running Head: Research Investigation WorkDunsworth 1The selected social science issue I have chosen to research on is the increasing rate ofsuicides in adolescents due to social media. Over the past 10 years, there has been an alarmingincrease in suicides in relation to social media use. Factors like cyber-bullying or exposure toviolent behavior via internet have shown statistically to inflict self-harm upon children. Socialmedia uses methods of communicating and sharing with others locally and globally. Somemethods include: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Chat Rooms, Board Discussions, and more. These methods make easy access to anonymous threats, harassment, and verbal abuse to otherusers. It is important to research on this topic as it seems to be an increasing public healthproblem in relation to suicide and social media use. Specifically, children who are morevulnerable have access to methods of cyber-bullying and harassment. At a young age, mostoften this does much damage to a child who is in the process of developing, mentally andemotionally. Research is needed so this problem can be known in efforts to decrease suiciderates. Research is also needed so a plan of helping this cause can be made aware.According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide rates cameclose to tripling from 2007 to 2017. It is important to understand that social media could havebeen a leading factor in this rise. Many children who committed suicide already struggledwith mental disorders and the use of social media can feed onto their depression, anxiety, insecurities, and other mental health issues. It is essential to vocalize this problem as much aspossible to spread awareness. Simple methods like cutting down a child’s screen time per daycould make a difference. When we make problems aware, we are able to influence moresolutions.

This sourcehighlights the negative influence social media inflicts upon children. The source providesexamples and evidence of bad influences from social networking that ultimately contributedto youth suicides. It is extremely useful for my investigation as it obtains factual statements ofchildren witnessing a dark side to the web that triggers their mental health issues further. Allthis information is valuable and credible to my investigation. When searching through theShapiro Library, I used keywords such as: social media AND youth suicide, children AND
