2Lesson3CirclesCIRCLE AND TERMS RELATEDA. Definition of a CircleAcircleis the set of all points that are with the same distance froma fixed point. This fixed point is called the center of the circle.Aradiusis a line segment from the center of the circle to a pointon the circle. The plural of radius is radii. What is ItYou can probably recognize circles even when you wereyoung. When you hear the word circle, round shapes maycome to your mind. Now, we will learn how circles areshaped this way.In the activity above, you saw that points that are the samedistance froma fixed-point yields a round shape.Note: A circle is named by its center. The circle at the right is called Circle O.
3B.Terms Related to CircleOn Circle O, segments AD, BF, CG, andHE were constructed so that their endpoints arepoints on the circle. Measure each segment anddetermine which of these segments is the longest.Find the measure of angle APB below. The activity above introduced you to other parts of a circle.Achordis a segment that connects any two points of a circle. AD,BF, CG, and HE are chords of Circle O.The diameter is aspecial chordthat passes through the centerof the circle. The diameter would be thelongest chordin the circle.Adiameteris a chord that passes through the center of a circle.BF is a diameter of Circle O. It is the longest chord of a circle and it istwice the length of a circle’s radius. All the diameters of the same circle have the same length.Acentral angleis an angle whose vertex is on the circle’scenter, and whose sides intersect the circle at two points. Angle APB is a centralangle of Circle P.Anarcis a portion of a circle determined by a central angle. ArcAB is an arc of Circle P.An arc can be measured indegrees.Look at the illustration below, what do you observe?
4From the above diagram, the line containing the points J andB is a tangent to the circle A.Atangentis a line that intersects with a circle at one point.
