King’s theory of “Goal Attainment” focuses on perceptions, communications, interactions, andtransactions between nurses and clients as part of the process of mutual goal setting to achieve astate of health. Her theory states that people have 3 basic needs: personal, interpersonal, andsocial systems(Caceres, 2015). Personal needs consist of one’s own identity, such as self-perception, body image, learning, growth, space, and time(Caceres, 2015). Interpersonal needsare one’s interactions with others and the environment, this involves interaction, communication,transaction, role, stress, and coping(Caceres, 2015). Social systems involve organization,authority, power, control, status, and decision-making(Caceres, 2015). King explains that these 3basic needs or “systems” are constantly interacting and are related. King’s theory involves goalsetting between the nurse and the client, and the process of achieving these goals relies on thenursing process(Caceres, 2015).
