Matthew Malinowski Gen 410 Dr. Borchers 3/1/08 Consilience and Mountains Beyond Mountains As the old saying goes “two heads are better than one” then why is it that in today’s society, people receive an education in only one specific area. Most doctors only know about how to perform operations and not how to relate to others by a more personal base. A doctor would be a lot more helpfully in helping others if he could tell them what to do in a way that they understand and same goes with a teacher who is trying to inform students of a certain subject. This idea is one of the main goals that both Edward O Wilson’s Consilience and Tracy Kidder’s Mountains Beyond Mountains tries to show that sharing information and knowledge with others to bring about something bigger and better. Edward O Wilson defines the term “Consilience” as a “jumping together of knowledge by the linking of facts and fact-based theory across disciplines to create a common groundwork for explanation” (page 8) Wilson makes the argument that “If the
