Social Psychology in V for Vendetta
“People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their
people.” Throughout history, there has been a struggle for power and control between a governing
body and its people. In the movie “V for Vendetta”, the government has ultimate control over its
people in a dystopian future, created by a series of strategic but tragic events that could be in the
very near future for the United States. Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V
for Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who
is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante known only by the letter ”V”(Hugo
Weaving). Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V
resurrects and re-ignites a forgotten revolution when he detonates two of London’s landmarks and
takes over the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny
an oppression. In the spirit of that rebellion, and in remembrance of
that day, V vows to carry out
the plot the Guy Fawkes was executed for attempting on November 5, 1605—he will blow up
Parliament. As Evey begins to uncover the truth about V’s mysterious background, she also
discovers the truth about herself—and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his agenda
