CRIM 4700 FALL 2007 FINAL LUCKEY November 1, 2007 CHAPTER 7 STRAIN THEORIES Robert Merton is the founder of Strain Theories. He says that because of the AMERICAN DREAM there is social inequality. The American Dream has a different meaning for different people. However, for most people it means that it takes hard work to achieve success. Wealthy people tend to have it easier in life. They do not have the same stresses as poor people. Wealthy people have connections. If you are wealthy and powerful, then you know other wealthy and powerful people. There would not be as big of a problem if the poor did not want the same things as the rich. There is an extra strain on the lower class; no matter how hard they work. People respond to strain in 5 ways: 1. CONFORMITY—this is following the rules of society. Most people conform 2. INNOVATION—people who innovate come up with their own ways of achieving success. They reject societies ways. ***EXAMPLE—drug dealers*** 3. RITUALISM—after continuing to be rejected, people give up but still obey the law. 4. RETREATISM—individuals completely give up and remove themselves from society ***EXAMPLE—alcoholics and drug users*** 5. REBELLION—individuals completely reject society and replace it with their own goals and means. It is very important to look at the environment to determine the subculture they will be placed in. A CRIMINAL SUBCULTURE is poverty-stricken. It is hard to legitimately obtain goals. Residents are open to innovation. Gangs flourish. Criminal subcultures can be found in poor or rich environments.

A VIOLENT SUBCULTURE has no mechanisms for dealing with strain. These people turn to violence. A RETREATIST SUBCULTURE is filled with individuals that are considered DOUBLE FAILURES. These are your drug addicts and alcoholics. Some criticisms of Strain Theory are that it assumes that criminals are ambitious. Also, social structure is not a good predictor of crime Strain theories were abandoned in the 1970s. November 06, 2007
