Unformatted text preview: Outline 26/03/2008 17:06:00 ITALIAN NEOREALISM (p 359) Historical Context o 1945 to 1951. o Italian directors were newly freed from the Fascist censorship, but also lost their organizational center. Neorealists sought to portray cinematic realism with a focus on social, political, and economic themes that the Regime never would have accepted. o Ended because incomes began to rise and so Italians began to prefer American cinema. o Post war. o De Sica says to us, My films are a struggle against the absence of human solidarity against the indifference of society towards suffering. They are a word in favor of the poor and unhappy. o Postwar officials were outraged at the portrayal of Italy as a desolate, poverty stricken country. Church officials condemned many films for their anticlericalism and their portrayal of sex and working class life. Leftists attacked the films for their pessimism and lack of explicit political commitment. o Andreotti Law : Put a quota on how many American films could come in; offered loans to government approved scripts; films that slandered Italy would be denied an export license. Influences o French poetic realism o Jean Renoir o Their greatest single influence was the anti-Fascism that marked World War II's immediate postwar period Ideology/Philosophy: o A new democratic spirit, with emphasis on the value of ordinary people o A compassionate point of view and a refusal to make facile (easy) moral judgments. o A preoccupation with Italys Fascist past and its aftermath of wartime devastation o A blending of Christian and Marxist humanism o An emphasis on emotion rather than abstract ideas....
