Dance 35 Monday February 25 th , 2008 ***!!!Haddad Dance of S. Africa Courtship dance. Guy looks over to get the girls eye and to dance with her but she can look away [like Tango]. African Dance. Nothing primitive about it. Very upright with the body stiff. Hopping, clapping. The women [out of control: flipping hair around, rocking head] are wilder than the men [in control]. A woman can deny a man but she cannot select one. ***Xhosa Tribe: The Shaking Dance African dance should get the recognition it deserves. Polyrhythmic: different parts of the body moving at the same time. ***Zulu Christian Dances Divided by age/gender. Men are in one group by themselves and the women are in a group by themselves. Hierarchy [empes: age groups of dancers] in age/gender. Daughters of the Church of Nazareth: Young, single women. Women have an umbrella in one hand and a shield in the other. Absorbing the conquering culture [umbrellas] while preserving their own
