Dance 35 Monday March 10, 2008 Native American Dance Ghost Dance Messianic Movement among natives, 1850’s and beyond. Pan Indian: not just one tribe. Mesianic Movement: the belief that the natives would survive the manifest destiny and western Europeans would perish. It was believed that if you wear a white shirt and do the ghost dance in battle and the bullets could not hurt you. **Hopi Snake Dance Rain dance. Gather hundreds of snakes and dance with them. Snakes can exist in both worlds and are the gateway to the spirit world. Inuit Simple, not a lot of time to invest in dance. Make igloos. Drum dance. Doesn’t take much space. Haida Totem pole raising ceremony. Button blankets. Totem pole=animals that are special to a clan or family. Potlatch Dance Haida, Kwakiutl, and others. Giving amongst the powerful, rich people of the tribe. The more you can give away, the more powerful you are.
