Katie Whelley GVPT170 Section 0101 Final Exam Securing America from Terrorism While Safeguarding Civil Liberties The United States is a self proclaimed pillar of moral values. We are the destroyers of Communism, Fascism, terrorism and any other “ism” that deems itself to be against democracy. What allows the US to proclaim itself a pillar of moral values? The US Constitution. Since 1789 this piece of paper has been one of the most important documents in the US and among other democratic countries. Not only does it uphold all the rights and liberties that Americans hold dear it has proven to be a model for all other democratic countries around the world. However on September 11 th 2001, 212 years after it was ratified, the US Constitution received an enormous blow. After the 9/11 World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks the fear of terrorism swept across the country and American civil rights and liberties were swept away with it. Many will argue that in this new era of technology more drastic measures have to be taken to combat terrorism at home and abroad. Rudolf Giuliani, former mayor of New York City, stated in an Op-ed piece in the New York Times “The attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, made clear that
