HIST-4516 14/11/2007 17:59:00 Batchelor Society Major trends toward single men and single women. They’re not the middle- class, but in a rising lower middle-class. Jobs for single lower middle-class o Commerical Bureaucracy – permanent lower level clerkship or  management jobs for men. o Now that women are regularly graduating high school, they are  beginning to become secretaries. Typewriters and telephones create  the demand for such assistant jobs. o Provide social interaction within large commercial structures. Creates a bachelor society. It’s jobs that you don’t spend your life in.  Correlate to “glass ceilings” today. Increasing groups of young men and women boarding together. Most popular magazine at this time was the: National Police Gazette Combination of Sports Illustrated, Playboy, and the National Enquirer. Magazine of men’s gathering places. Saloons, clubs, barber shops.
