Alright guys. Here are all the notes from this section (minus 3 days I was gone all during India). If you have any questions just shoot me an e-mail back! Mesopotamia: *Mesopotamia: Between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers -Had mostly palm trees -Used mud bricks to build -Believed the world used to be all water -Sea and ocean water = Goddess Tiamont -Marries river water = God Apsu -Their marriage produced dirt -Their children were the Gods and Goddesses of Mesopotamia -Their children created flora, fauna, and man -They wanted men to be their slaves - The dirt that Apsu and Tiamont created moved on top of Tiamont making her sick -She destroys the dirt -Tiamont fights with her husband Apsu -Their children start attacking them so they set aside their differences and attack their children -Apsu is killed -Tiamont marries Kingu

-Tiamont and Kingu fight their children -Everytime Mesopotamia is conquered, the story changes a little -In the end, Marduke kills Kingu and splits Tiamont in half. -Half under the earth (water) and half above the earth (sky) This story is the Babylonian version of how the world was created -If the Gods aren’t happy, they destroy parts of Mesopotamia - Priests and Priestesses are given the job of finding out how to please the Gods by reading omens (signs given by the Gods) - The chief priest is called Nesi -The Nesi is the most important part of society -Temples = pyramids made of mud bricks -Sacrifices were mad at the top of pyramids -Ziggurates = special temples made of mud bricks -The king is called the Lugal -The Lugal leads armies and interprets omens that the priests couldn’t -Mesopotamians invented Astrology. Studied stars a lot. Set up a system of future telling based on what star you were born under. -Astronomy = scientifically studying stars Wetlands: -People made homes of river reeds - most southern part = Sumer -writing was invented in Sumer

-Cuneiform = picture writing -used small river reeds to write on wet mud -left in the sun to dry -tablets were usually small and postage stamp sized -large tablets were usually the size of the palm of your hand -scribes = people who could read/write -Ur = the largest Mesopotamian city -Mesopotamians buried the royalty with their entire court when they died -Archeologists found a site that had civilization, then 8 ft of dirt, and then an older civilization. They thought it could have been the great flood from the bible. -Akkad = a city that started from the city Agade -Akkadians conquered the city Sumer -Sargon the 2 nd was the King of Akkad -Sargon the 2 nd dictated his life story to scribes -Sargon’s parents sent him away in the same way Moses was -a palace gardener found/raised him -he was a servant to the royal family -The king at the time suggested he join the military -When the king died, Sargon was the leading general of the military and takes over as king -Sumer and Akkad = the southern half of Mesopotamia -Babylon = capital city of Mesopotamia -Babylonia is what the southern half of Mesopotamia was called -First epic ever written was the story of Gilgamesh.
