Introduction The objective of this project is to design a new, more efficient line of vending machines, on paper. Vending machines have been around for a while now with new technological innovations being incorporated all the time. From its beginnings in 1880s in London, England where it was used to dispense post cards to the present times when it’s used for dispensing food, stamps, coins and a whole lot of other stuff, day after day, vending machines have become more and more of an indispensable part of our daily lives. This is all the more reason to make more innovations in these machines in order to enable it to serve customers with at most efficiency. The new line of vending machines that is being worked on in this project will incorporate numerous features from the old vending machines such as the money detector and items dispenser mechanisms. The difference in this new line is that many vending machines will be networked together. This would enable a network administrator to keep track of all the vending machines in a complex and manage them more efficiently. For this, an ARM based controller will be implemented along with serial and parallel I/Os. The ARM based controller will interface with the money machine and the dispenser and a serial interface will be used for remote messaging which will be used for setting various parameters. With this messaging system, the vending machines will be able to send information such as coin box full , out of change , not-ready condition and low-product level to the central location. More details about the vending machine itself are given in the next category. A user perspective of the vending machine is shown in the next page.
